Marika Neustupny

Marika Neustupny is a founding director of NMBW Architecture Studio, and holds a PhD from the University of Queensland. NMBW’s projects have been widely published and exhibited in local, national and international contexts. The practice has been awarded numerous times by the Australian Institute of Architects for residential projects, such as the John and Phyllis Murphy Award in 2014 for South Yarra Warehouse, as well as the Harold Desbrowe-Annear Award in 2011 for Sorrento House and again in 2019 for North Melbourne House. St Albans Housing, a project in collaboration with Monash University, MADA, received a 2023 ArchitectureAU Award for Social Impact Commendation, plus a National Commendation and State Award from the Institute in 2022. NMBW is currently undertaking a Post Occupancy Evaluation of this work with funding from the Alastair Swayn Foundation.

Gaining an understanding of the social and cultural rituals of urban life in Naarm / Melbourne has formed a constant backdrop to Marika’s architectural design teaching and research over 25 years. This work includes continuing lectures in Asian urbanism at RMIT University and being part of a Commonwealth Research Grant team at Monash University, studying prefabricated walls for multiresidential construction. Marika is committed to re-framing questions around gender in the architectural profession and more broadly in the construction industry; she currently chairs the Institute’s National Committee for Gender Equity, and has recently co-guest edited the September 2023 issue of Architect Victoria, Migration. Women. Architecture. Marika is leading NMBW’s exhibition project with the Robin Boyd Foundation, due to be installed in February 2024, named When Robin Boyd Went to Japan.
